Well, it’s about time to detox from this. Ever f Well, it’s about time to detox from this. Ever feel like you’re losing touch — with yourself or your passion or your direction in life? I’ve definitely had a bit of that this year, and it’s had weird effects on me artistically, mentally, physically, and emotionally. I’ve noticed that in 2020 I did so much more doom scrolling, checked the news about 15 times a minute, and checked or scrolled through social media apps constantly. I second guess myself more than ever when it came to my passions and art based on how things played out on apps like Instagram and others, or had my confidence rattled by how it “performed” on social media. It seems like there was so much bad news that I had to keep checking every second to see if something changed, while gobbling up headlines made to give you anxiety in an anxiety filled year. It seemed like in this past year with all of the crazy things happening I reverted to feeding happiness with instant satisfaction that was never there or information buffets that never really helped. I stopped working out, stopped writing, struggled to follow through on goals set to make videos, got consistently terrible sleep or no sleep while simultaneously laying in bed until late in the day, stopped believing in my abilities and my passion, and became obsessed with things that were made for me to obsess over. Coming into the new year I ache all over from lack of physical activity, I feel uninspired, my fingers and hands feel the effects of constant social media scrolling, and my mind is fogged over. Yes, there were factors that led to more pronounced effects like losing all my clients at the start of 2020 or losing my 6 month summer job on the sailboats — but I do feel like one of the biggest effects has been supplementing this past year with digital happiness pills. Which has ended up really messing with my creativity and drive to create. So, I am going to be deleting this app and others off my phone and won’t be posting on them for at least a couple weeks. I want to reassess where I want to take my creativity, map out things I want to accomplish for myself this year, build out a healthier routine for my body and mind. Stay safe.✌️
Dangerously sweet. Palm date harvesting in La Puri Dangerously sweet. Palm date harvesting in La Purísima, Baja California Sur, Mexico. After suiting up with cowboy boots rigged with spikes, one farmer climbs the palm tree trying not to shred his arms while focusing on not falling. At the top, he rigs a line to the bottom, hacks a bundle of palm dates free, and lifts the heavy load onto the line to zip it down. At the bottom, another person catches the bundle that weighs around 50lbs zipping down the line. One wrong move and the farmer in the tree can fall, or the bundle can crash into the catcher at the bottom and break a leg. Which has happened to each of them before. After, the dates are plucked off and laid out to dry, eventually becoming the sweet palm dates you find in your local grocer for a few bucks. Next time you eat a date, remember it could have come from a remote desert somewhere, with this much danger and effort involved.

While living in Oaxaca, I’ve found myself taking While living in Oaxaca, I’ve found myself taking my film camera everywhere I go instead of my digital. And this recent set of photos I got back I was ecstatic over. I’ve noticed now when I snap I photo on my mirrorless, I review it and when I get home I pop it onto the computer and edit. And edit. And edit. Thinking over how I want the photo to look, how it’ll look on IG, what might perform better. But when I take a photo on film, there is no review — just hope. Hope the photo will come out and that you got the shot you wanted in 1 take. Hope that you read the light and shadows and scene properly so it comes out in an image you imagined. And though sometimes you have the disappointment of a missed shot, the surprise of getting a roll back and flipping through and the joy of it is unmatched. I’ve been taking much more film photos out here in Mexico because developing it is cheaper and still amazing quality, but the feeling I’ve noticed I get just isn’t matched on digital. I don’t have as much second guessing or hours of editing — just the chemical reaction, the type of film, and the shot I chose to take over all of the others. This photo is one I had no clue would come out... I balanced the camera on my water bottle, set a focus I thought would be the distance, and set the timer. I nearly fell running over to this spot and figured it would be me flailing about trying to catch myself. Instead, I really have a photo I cherish of myself formed of light and photons and silver halides.

Literally the sands of time right here. The local Literally the sands of time right here. The local captain that took us out to these sand dunes in Adolfo Lopez Mateos told us that they haven’t always been there, and won’t always be there either. That every year the desert changes based on the winds and water that can cause them to change the shape of the channel or completely disappears as well. There were sand bars and islands we cruised around that the birds use to wait until fish get trapped in a pool from the rising tide for an easy feast, but years where there are no sand bars can make their hunt much more difficult. The sand dunes fall right into the sea on one side, and on the other end the mangroves create a protective shallow channel where the migratory gray whales come to breed and raise their young before a long journey. Where we were in Baja California Sur was definite “off the beaten path” but it was well worth it to experience the thrill of running around sand dunes that could disappear by the time I can visit again.

🌵Have you ever seen a cactus this big? 🌵Carn 🌵Have you ever seen a cactus this big? 🌵Carnegiea Gigantea aka Saguaro Cactus aka Tall AF Cactus can grow up to 40ft tall, how crazy is that? We stopped a couple of times on our road trip in Baja California Sur to get up close and personal with these colossal cacti and it’s mind blowing when you’re up close to a cluster of them. In La Purísima, there was a forest of them and I’m kicking myself for not making it a point to wander through them. We were on a tight schedule so as I was snapping some photos at sunset I had to hop in the van when it came past. Seriously, these cacti are the things of imagination, something I imagine myself drawing as a kid and accidentally making the proportions gigantic — not even knowing that they exist.
